9th Graders Serving the CommunityGuilford County Schools endorses seven character traits to learn throughout the year: Respect, Responsibility, Courage, Kindness, Perseverance, Self-Discipline, and Integrity. These character traits were taught to the 9th grade PE/Health classes every other week. We would discuss a different trait at each meeting, with the ultimate goal of using these traits to serve the community. Service learning was introduced in the beginning so students were aware that our end goal would be to serve. We served the school by posting encouraging messages around the school as we learned new character traits. For example, we studied courage during the month of Breast Cancer Awareness. Students created messages about Courage on pink paper and the signs were displayed around the school. At the end of the semester, the students determined how and who they would like to serve. Because there were six different PE/Health classes, we went to many different locations: Food Assistance inc, Clapps Nursing Home, Horse Power Therapeutic Learning Center, Allen Jay Elementary School. The students chose who they would serve and staff found organizations that would allow us to volunteer.
