Student/"Grandfriends" Partnership ProgramStudents from a fifth grade classroom are matched with residents from a local assisted living facility. Once a month students are transported by bus to the facility to visit with "grandfriends" (residents) and share crafts, stories and songs. Students engage in prosocial skills such as active listening and demonstrate respect for people from another generation. This practice enables students to put core values into practice in a community setting and allows each student to acquire a sense of competence in building relationships, valuing and being valued by others. Students engage in teamwork as projects are planned and carried out in preparation for the visits. Students learn to put principles into action within their community and reflect on both the process and the experiences they have with their grandfriends.
