Capacity to CareCreating the Capacity to Care is a monthly service project that couples fourth grade students with residents of local retirement centers and nursing homes. As Hubert Humphrey once said, "The true measure of a great society is how we treat those in the dawn of their lives and those in the twilight of their lives.” While Mr. Humphrey was probably talking about federal programs for children and the elderly, his comment also applies to what we are trying to teach our fourth graders. We want them to realize they too can significantly impact the lives of senior citizens in our community. We have tried to impress upon them that you don’t have to be an adult to make a difference in the lives of others; children can make a tremendous difference as well. With this in mind, our fourth grade students plan the agenda for each visit to the retirement center, organize materials, and prepare refreshments. Once there, they read books, play checkers or bingo, work on puzzles, play games, and put on programs and recitals. Our students spend time being in the lives of their elderly friends.
