Military Care Package ProjectEast Elementary had a “military care package project” in November of 2010. We did this as part of our school’s character club activities. Our goal was to reach others through service-learning type activities that related to specific character traits. We collected coins at our school, and we wrote personal letters to military personnel that are friends or family of East staff and students. The students got to learn about each solider (branch of military, where they are located, etc). We collected $1200 in coins. The money was used to purchase items for the military personnel (using wish lists provided by the friends and families). We sent out care packages to 26 different soldiers, all around the world. We had an overwhelmingly positive response. Many of the soldiers wrote letters back to us thanking us for the packages. East Elementary even received some special items of thanks, including an engraved plate, a stuffed camel, and many pictures. Our students truly appreciate the men and women serving our country.
