A Letter for Uncle JoeWhat began as a service-learning project ended up as a continuing partnership between a second grade class and senior citizens at an assisted living facility in our community. Our class decided to forgo our holiday party in order to make a difference for others in our community by keeping senior citizens company for an afternoon. Students practiced singing holiday songs, chose and practiced reading books, picked out games to play, and made cards and small gifts to present to the seniors for our visit. Some students had to overcome their fear of visiting with people who they didn’t know in order to complete this project. The students enjoyed their time with the seniors so much that we decided to continue our relationship with the seniors that we met in December. These experiences have not only positively impacted the students’ attitudes and perceptions of older adults, but have also fostered a feeling of gratitude and a desire to give back to the community.
