Soy Scents Candle CompanyThe Soy Scents Candle Company is a non-profit business operated by students in a small business class. They make and market soy candles and soaps donating all profits to the Northfield Food Shelf. In the five-and-a-half years the business has been in operation, more than $15,000 has been donated. Monthly donations have ranged from $102-$815. The students learn many aspects of running a business from production and marketing to customer service, all with the sole purpose of providing financial support to our local food shelf. This support is not only financial though. Every Friday afternoon students from the class go to the food shelf to stock shelves and help clients with their food selections. Each year students volunteer more than 100 hours there. In November, while selling candles at the Northfield Hospital, the students partnered up with another non-profit organization called I.R.I.S. Infants Remembered in Silence. Soy Scents provided 50 candles for I.R.I.S at cost for their annual memorial service for parents who have lost children. The Soy Scents Candle business can truly be considered a social entrepreneurship.
