DENSCharacter education is embedded into the school improvement process at Warren Elementary. The DENS program was created to engage students in the character education process. Each DEN is comprised of a multi-grade-level group, and it provides opportunities for student voice, increased student responsibility and leadership. About once a month during the year, 5th grade leaders plan, organize and implement service learning projects for the rest of the students and staff members of the school. From researching the needs of the community to guiding younger students though the final project, 5th-grade leaders become an integral piece of the character education program. Examples of the DENS activities include an annual food drive, stuffing stockings and writing letters to troops, making blankets for a crisis nursery, working with the local pet adoption center to educate the community about animal safety and making decorations for area retirement centers.
