Breaking BoundariesAt Walls Elementary School, several students originate from different countries, bringing with them various customs, cultural traditions, and unique experiences. This diversity created the need for a stronger cultural understanding within the school community. With this need in mind, the school developed a unit focusing on multiculturalism which would allow students to build a foundation for heightened cultural awareness and respect for others. The lessons were created to be open-ended so that all students, no matter their degree of cultural understanding, would benefit and grow. Throughout the unit students were encouraged to look at their background and the cultures of others to compare them and find a common ground. Shortly after the earthquake in Haiti, the students developed a service learning project titled “Help for Haiti." During this project the students used new-found knowledge and understanding to promote their cause.
