Pennies for PeaceThis year Bayless Intermediate is dedicated to involving our students in a school-wide service-learning project. In looking for a project that the students could identify with, the school came across the book named Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace...One School at a Time, by David Oliver Relin and Greg Mortenson. Mortenson’s life as a mountain-climber turned into a social activist in Pakistan and Afghanistan is recounted. We believe our students can help with Mortenson’s efforts to continue promoting education rather than fear in this part of the world. Through the Pennies for Peace program, students will learn about the culture and people of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Lessons can be incorporated into all areas of study in the classroom. The diverse student population develop critical thinking skills, deepen their understanding of the complex causes of social problems, and enhance their skills in working together for a common goal. They apply responsibility and cooperation skills by raising money for other kids their own age, and cooperation skill because they have to work as a team to raise that money.
